Poole Grammar School Ofsted Report
"Poole Grammar school students enjoy the intellectual challenge of their
lessons and the school provides outstanding opportunities for personal development and well being" HMI Gloria
Dolan Lead Inspector
Poole Grammar School was praised in its recent Ofsted inspection for many aspects of the quality of education it provides. For
example the outstanding personal development of its pupils, the very high standards reached by pupils and the good progress they
make. Reference was also made to the excellent leadership by the headteacher, which is strongly focused on raising standards,
and all staff, senior managers and governors support this clear vision for the school.
Inspectors were particularly impressed with the pastoral care within the school which was judged as outstanding in all areas;
for example pupils making a positive contribution to the community through the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and the adoption
of healthy lifestyles. Pupils were particularly praised for their behaviour, attitudes to learning and their enjoyment of school,
both main lessons and the wide range of extra activities provided for them. The inspectors highlighted the school's support for
its vulnerable pupils, including those with special needs and disabilities. This results in their inclusion in all areas of
school life.
The report emphasised that in the Sixth Form, students work to a high standard and pass rates are high with students making
good overall progress. Pastoral support and careers guidance are exceptionally good and produces students who are articulate,
confident and ask searching questions in lessons. Student participation in the wide range of sporting, cultural and charitable
activities is enthusiastic. Of particular note was the proportion of A level A/B grades over the last three years which are
much higher than the national average and rising.
The inspection praised the detailed and self-critical self-evaluation, which had already raised the issues that the inspection
team judged, could be further improved. The three areas Ofsted commented on were to (i) make greater use of data to improve
pupil performance, (ii) ensure high quality teaching is consistent throughout the school and (iii) improve further student
success at AS level and in GCSE sciences and maths.
Ian Carter, Headmaster, commented,
"A great deal of planning had already taken place prior to the inspection
to raise achievement at AS level, though of course the A level results and University places that pupils obtain do speak for
themselves. The school is also investing heavily in refurbishing all of its laboratories to provide state of the art facilities
for science teaching and there is a constant focus on giving teachers the best environment to teach at the highest
standard."
He want on to say,
"How proud he was to lead a team of such talented teachers and support staff
who were totally committed to providing pupils with the best possible education they could and would no doubt continue to do so
under the careful guidance of an outstanding Governing Body. The school is not complacent and valued the 'health check' that
Ofsted has provided and will be focussing its efforts on being the outstanding boys' grammar school on the South Coast."
